An evidence-based health managment approach

HealthStyle offers a range of customised health management services including exercise programs, personal training, supervised exercise sessions, sensible dietary advice, and education for people with diabetes.  Eligible participants can claim Medicare or private health insurance rebates.

Type 2 Diabetes HealthStyle Program

Regular exercise and healthy eating is essential therapy for people with Type 2 Diabetes.  Combining aerobic exercise and strength training leads to the greatest improvement in diabetes outcomes like glucose control, insulin sensitivity, and HbA1c.  You may also be able to reduce doses of common diabetes medications such as Metformin, Diabex, Diamicron, Actos, Avandia, and insulin.

Specific Medicare funding is available for people with Type 2 Diabetes to attend HealthStyle's supervised exercise sessions free of charge.

Cardiovascular HealthStyle Program

Improve your fitness and reduce the risk of future cardiovascular events through supervised exercise and healthy eating. HealthStyle offers safe exercise in a supervised environment and healthy eating advice for people who have had coronary heart disease.

Appropriately prescribed exercise has been shown to reduce the severity of cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure) and can sometimes lead to a reduction in medications such as Atenolol and Propranolol (beta-blockers), or Coversyl (ACE inhibitors). All changes to medication should be guided by the prescribing doctor.

Weight Management HealthStyle Program

Evidence shows that a combination of healthy eating and exercise is the healthiest and most effective way to reduce body fat and build strong muscles and bones. Research shows that regular exercise is essential for long term weight maintenance.

Our weight management program is suitable for everyone who would like a healthier body. HealthStyle currently provides exercise physiology services to people who are to undergo bariatric surgery (ie. Lap-bands).

Mental Health HealthStyle Program

Exercise has been shown to be as effective as medications in reducing symptoms of major depression. You also get the health benefits through that regular exercise and healthy eating provide, such as decreased body fat, and increased stamina and strength.

Our supervised group sessions also provide the opportunity to have a chat and a laugh with people like yourself.

Osteoporosis Healthstyle Program

Weight-bearing exercise and optimal nutrition has been proven to reduce the rate of bone loss from osteoporosis. Increasing muscle strength and balance also helps prevent falls, and exercise with  weights is often required - walking is not enough.  This type of exercise should be carefully prescribed and supervised for people with osteoporosis.

Research shows that weight-bearing exercise and a diet with adequate calcium helps augment the action of osteoporosis medications like Fosamax and Caltrate.

A friendly and supervised environment

The HealthStyle Health Management Centre has a fully air-conditioned exercise studio with a range of cardiovascular and strength training equipment.

HealthStyle's exercise centre is not your traditional gym.  There's no mirrors, no thumping music, and no lycra clothing – just friendly staff and people just like you trying to live healthier, happier, and longer.

It is fully supervised by university qualified exercise physiologists.  They make sure you know what you're doing and don't hurt yourself, and help you stay motivated and on track to your goals.  No other Townsville exercise facility provides a higher level of service.

You don't need a doctor's referral to join us at HealthStyle.

The HealthStyle Clinic is centrally located at 244 Ross River Rd (corner Charlotte St), Aitkenvale, not far from the Vale Hotel.

Medicare and Private Health Rebates

All HealthStyle staff are all university qualified health professionals so you may be eligible for Medicare or private health insurance rebates for our one-to-one consultations or group membership fees.

To be eligible for Medicare rebates you GP must consider you to have a chronic medical condition and complex care needs, and must have a GP Management Plan (sometimes called a care plan) and Team Care Arrangements in place for you. You will then be eligible for up to five one-on-one Medicare consultations each calendar year.  DVA Gold and White Card holders can also access HealthStyle services with a doctors referral.

People with Type 2 Diabetes can access an additional eight Medicare funded group exercise sessions  provided by HealthStyle's exercise physiologist.

We bulk-bill exercise physiology services for EPC patients meaning you pay nothing for these services.  There is an out of pocket amount for dietitian services.
